Rick Owens Menswear Spring 2010

Men’s Fashion Week has hit Paris and it’s been already two interesting days. With, probably the two most talented, designers John Galliano and Raf Simon, Paris Fashion Week has shown the best extremes that keep fashion so innovative and inspiring. But I’ve wanted to start by putting the spot on Rick Owens, recently quoted in an interview saying “American tourists were ruining the Paris landscape with their fanny packs and their man bags”. The American designer living in Paris, explained his inspiration for his Spring 2010 collection. “I call it my all-American collection,” he said. “It’s sort of an apology for being such a jerk.”

Viewed from a straight point of view, the collection seems to be “okay” and then you realize he absorbed and transformed the staples of tourist-wear. Jeans, T-shirts, high-tops and even the fanny pack…the long jackets zipped down the back and their arms snapped together to somehow make a bag. The baggy knee-length shorts and the very very large coats were another Owens staple, and I like it a lot for showing a very gracious collection!
